Phases on Ocean/Before and After!

Flowers on Ocean:  A Day of Planting  - the June 7th event did not happen over night...

Over the last number of years, neighbors on Ocean Avenue have requested new trees for our block from MillionTreesNYC (phase 1) .  Seeing the interest in trees and greening on the block, Ocean by the Park Tree Club was formed in the spring of 2013 and rallied to receive a Neighborhood Beautification Grant from the Brooklyn Borough President's office (then Marty Markowitz - not sure if the grant will be back this year - keep your fingers crossed).  As a result, we received beautiful wrought-iron tree guards up and down the block in late October of 2013 (phase 2).  After the tree guards were in, we decided planting flowers in all of the newly enlarged - and now enclosed - tree beds would be the next step, so we wrote and received a Citizens Committee for NYC grant - and planting we did (phase 3)!

AFTER

PS:  Bulb planting in the fall - phase 4 here we come!  More to come!

Flow of the Day!

STEP 1 - Check-in, snacks, sign-up for drawing

STEP 2 - Volunteers rally around a tree bed for a tree and flower care training.

Here is the check-list that was covered in the training

List is based on the one provided through the Tree Care Captain program provided by MillionTreesNYC - http://www.milliontreesnyc.org/html/care/tree_captain.shtml
Each tree bed received two Lily Turf (or Liriope, labeled) and four Hosta (label is not showing for some reason)
STEP 3 - Get to work!

More photos are coming soon!

THANK YOU!

A HUGE THANK YOU to the over 70 neighbors and friends who helped us beautify Ocean Avenue this past Saturday!  Walking up and down Ocean Avenue yesterday with my daughter and husband I was amazed at the transformation!  Today as it rains, I know that 300 flowers are happy in their new gardens, and that an array of neighbors are eager and ready (with new tools and watering supplies) to care for these flowers into the future.

Here's the day at a glance:

PLANTED:  50+ Tree Beds up and down Ocean Avenue
PLANTED:  300 Perennials (from Kings County Nursery)
SPREAD  60 bags of Compost (from DSNY via Build It Green! NYC)
SPREAD:  Countless bags of Mulch (from Prospect Park and the NYC Parks Department)
USED:  An array of gardening tools and supplies (from GreenThumbNYC)
CONSUMED:  Cider & Cider Donuts (from Williams Farm via Grand Army Plaza Farmers Market)
GIVEN AWAY:  Gardening gloves, supplies & tools (from MillionTreesNYC )
GIVEN AWAY:  Kids prizes (from Kings County Nursery)

Thanks again everyone!
