New Material from BBG

BBG has created two new flyers that are helpful to our street tree care and beautification efforts - please download and share!  Also, we were delighted to see one of our Ocean Avenue signs on the first page posted below ("Your trash poops and pees..." - third from left)!

June 3rd Planting Party!

June 3rd was a beautiful day and over 50 neighbors showed up for our 4th Annual (wow!) Planting Party!

A huge thank you to Citizens Committee for NYC for our Love your Block Grant (http://www.citizensnyc.org/grants/love-your-block), which enabled us to purchase new flowers for the block and offer snacks and an awesome Children's Raffle.  We also had additional snacks thanks to our 2016 Greenest Block in Brooklyn Residential Honorable Mention award from Brooklyn Botanic Garden (https://www.bbg.org/community/greenest_block_2016).  The city came through for us big-time with awesome Compost via The Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse (http://www.bigreuse.org/compost/) and mulch from NYC Parks via Prospect Park.  We also had a healthy supply of gardening gloves and tools that we put to good use donated to us over the years from NYC Super Stewards program (https://www.nycgovparks.org/reg/advanced-stewardship - formally Million Trees NYC).

Here is the event by the numbers:

CARED FOR:  50+ tree bed gardens up and down Ocean Avenue
PLANTED: Perennials in Tree Bed gardens and Annuals in container gardens (purchased at Kings County Nurseries and Brooklyn Botanic Gardens thanks to our Love Your Block grant from Citizens Committee)
SPREAD:  15 bags of Compost (from the DSNY Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse)
SPREAD:  Big Pile of Mulch (from NYC Parks via Prospect Park)
POSTED:  Customized Tree Care signs (thanks Paul G. for the awesome signs)
USED:  Countless gardening tools and gloves (from NYC Parks Stewardship)
RAFFLE PRIZES:  Kids gardening supplies (purchased at Kings County Nurseries thanks to our Love Your Block grant from Citizens Committee)
CONSUMED:  Lots of snacks! (thanks to our Love Your Block grant from Citizens Committee and our 2016 Greenest Block in Brooklyn Residential Honorable Mention award from Brooklyn Botanic Garden)

Thank you Seth & Dan for the pictures, and THANK YOU again to everyone who attended the Planting Party and to all of the organizations who helped make it happen!  We are looking forward to YEAR 5 in 2018!
