JOIN THE PLG POOP-BAG BRIGADE!

Our neighbor Dynishal Gross shared with me her secret to helping the new baby trees in PLG survive and thrive:

(1) Fill empty doggie poop-bags with H2O
(2) Gently pour H2O at the roots of a baby tree on the way to the park
(3) Use bag for intended purpose
(4) Repeat process on next walk with dog

Brilliant. Imagine if all dog owners/walkers - all neighbors for that matter - did this every time they left the house for a walk?

** New trees need about 15-20 gallons of water per week (http://www.nycgovparks.org/trees/tree-care/water). Our "test kitchen" found that an average plastic bag holds about 2-3 gallons. If you are not a plastic bag user, when you go for a walk bring a watering can, bucket, water bottle, repurposed milk jug or carton, IKEA bag - whatever works!

** Prospect Park Perimeter baby trees need YOU! We worked with NYC Street Trees to plant new trees all around the Prospect Park Perimeter (over 150 empty or stump-filled tree beds were on Ocean & Parkside alone when we did our survey vs only 4 on PPW). The city followed through and planted all of the viable tree beds (those that remain empty are due to overhang/shade or other obstructions). While the city assures us they will be watering them regularly, let's do our part!

** Dynishal also shared that there is another dog walker who always brings 2 bags to the park: one for poop, the other for picking up trash - another great idea.
